Richard practices civil litigation defense, with an emphasis on professional liability. Richard has experience representing attorneys, accountants, and real estate brokers in malpractice claims.

Richard also has extensive experience defending property owners, with unique experience litigating homeowner association disputes and the rights of 55 and older communities. Finally, Richard has significant experience defending product manufacturers.

Richard was born and raised in Renton, Washington. He earned his B.A. from the University of Washington in Seattle and his JD from the University of Michigan School of Law in Ann Arbor.

• Obtained summary judgment in multiple matters on behalf of professionals accused of misconduct, including cases filed against lawyers, medical practitioners, and real estate agents.

• Successfully defended products manufacturers in multiple trials alleging liabilities based on asbestos exposure. Including obtaining numerous dismissals on summary judgment and two defense verdicts in cases filed against automotive parts manufacturers, talc suppliers, and industrial equipment.

• Successfully moved the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to reverse injunctive relief seeking to terminate the 55 and older status for the City of Ryderwood, Washington, the nation’s oldest retirement community. Balvage v. Ryderwood Improvement and Seiwice Association, 642 F.3d 765 (2011).

• Obtained summary judgment on behalf of insurance brokers in multiple cases, including SMS Services LLC v. Hub Intern. Northwest, LLC, 2012 WL 748257 (W.D. Wash. 2012) (“absent a special relationship, an insurance broker has no obligation to recommend liability limits higher than those chosen by the insured.”)
